Here you can find information about possible uses for HSM-MODAL® for mock-up and prototype construction in the automobile industry.

 

Due to ever-decreasing model life cycles, there is an urgent need for an even quicker and more efficient development process in the auto industry. Because of its fast machining capabilities, HSM-MODAL® can be of substantial help to automobile producers in reducing the time taken to transform a design idea into a physical mock-up to be used for wind tunnel tests and aesthetic appraisal.

 

When does it make sense to use HSM-MODAL®?

In the following circumstances:

 

  •   In the construction of mock-ups in medium or full scale (1:1)

  •   When working with wood, polystyrene, plastics and similar materials for use in mock-ups

  •   For precision moulds and/or when high quality surfaces are required

  •   When short mock-up construction times are desired

  •   To reduce storage space requirement ? instead of storing, new mock-ups can quickly be made on demand, and at short notice

     

    For which tasks can a customer use HSM-MODAL®?

    HSM-MODAL® is ideal for the following:

     

  •   Milling of mock-ups

  •   Extrusion onto mock-ups

  •   Grinding and polishing of mock-ups

     

    What advantages does HSM-MODAL®offer the customer?

     

    HSM-MODAL®offers many benefits to the customer. Normally it can be operated fully automatically and, if required, it can be controlled by a single operator. Depending on the application, the customer will benefit from the following specific advantages:


    Application Advantages/Benefits
    Milling The maximum cutting speed of the material manufacturer can be achieved. This means that mock-ups can be very quickly and cleanly milled.
    Due to the high milling speed of HSM-MODAL®, broken or damaged mock-ups can be remilled within a short period of time.
    Milling-time is very short which allows for a flexible response to changing design ideas. Completely new mock-ups or changes to existing ones can be produced at short notice.
    New ideas and optimizations can be quickly transformed into physical mock-ups for wind tunnel testing, reducing development time.
    Fewer mock-ups need to be retained as 1:1 mock-ups can be produced on demand, reducing storage space requirement.
    Large mock-ups can be milled in one piece by the larger versions of the machine so that mock-ups of larger vehicles, such as trucks, can be produced in full scale or nearly full scale.
    The surface quality after milling can be so high that sanding and polishing are not necessary.
    Extruding Extrusions can usually be applied by the machine directly onto the mock-ups. This has the advantage over manual application in that it uses less material and does not trap air bubbles.

    Grinding and polishing All sizes of surface, from small to large, can be evenly and thoroughly grinded and polished.
    Results obtained from grinding and polishing are reproducible.
